Annual Demand for Recycled Water
Denver Water's Recycled Water project reduces the demand for potable water (safe for drinking) by providing non-potable water to customers who need large volumes of water for things other than household use. Recycled water serves industries as well as commercial and government customers with significant irrigation needs, like golf courses and parks. At its full capacity, the system will provide more than 19,000 acre feet of recycled water per year.
To deliver recycled water, Denver Water must create a new distribution system, to keep the recycled water separated from potable water. Because of this, recycled water customers are typically either industrial, commercial, government users with the largest system taps.
Even though recycled water cannot be used by residential customers at this time, they benefit from the recycled water system. Availability of recycled water conserves potable water for residential use.
Denver Water looks forward to reducing the use of potable water for applications such as landscape irrigation and cooling systems, as one of many conservation initiatives for the coming years. For more information on the Recycled Water Project, visit the Overview page.
