Water Use in a Semi-Arid Land

Our water supply has been stabilized and improved by wet weather and by customer efforts to conserve. It is too soon to determine if this means the end of the drought that plagues the Western states. However, because of conditions in spring of 2005, it does not seem necessary to impose restrictions associated with drought. And habits of conservation practiced by Denver Water's customers suggest that it is time to begin thinking of water use in terms of good water citizenship rather than restrictions and enforcement.

Existing rules on water conservation were amended last fall to prohibit watering of turf between 10 am and 6 pm, from May 1 to September 1. The rules also define water waste and penalties for wasting water.

Water Use Program for Summer of 2007

The water use program is designed to maintain the civic and economic life of customers. Compliance will help ensure continued water supplies and develop water use habits that will benefit individuals, metro Denver, and the state of Colorado.

Lawn Watering

All watering should avoid wasting water as defined in Section 14.01 of the Operating Rules. Consult the Program for suggestions for measuring and monitoring your water needs and usage. Check Denver Water's "Irrigation Best Management Practices" for tips to help you best manage your water use.

Other Outdoor Water Use

For specific recommendations about how to best managing other types of outdoor water use, such as washing cars and maintaining ponds or fountains, see Denver Water's Conservation "Best Management Practices."
