Heavy Equipment Mechanic I – $20.66 to $26.34 hourly
Heavy Equipment Mechanic II – $22.72 to $28.97 hourly

Denver Water’s Operations and Maintenance Division is currently seeking a qualified candidate to fill the temporary position of either Heavy Equipment Mechanic I or Heavy Equipment Mechanic II depending upon qualifications and experience. Under general supervision, performs skilled repair work in overhauling, repairing and maintaining a wide variety of diesel and gasoline powered heavy equipment, including backhoes, cranes and compressor graders, dozers and other earth moving equipment.
The successful candidate will be able to perform the following duties:
- Inspects and makes visual and mechanical tests of heavy equipment to determine the nature and extent of repairs needed. May use electronic diagnostic equipment.
- Overhauls and repairs gasoline engines, diesel engines, and engine accessories, inspecting, refitting, replacing and or adjusting such parts as pistons, rings, bearings, gears, pumps and carburetors.
- Repairs, replaces, or adjusts generators, alternators, starter motors, distributors, coils, lights, relays, control modules, and other parts of electrical systems.
- Adjusts, aligns, or replaces chassis parts, such as steering assemblies, brakes, wheels, and axles.
- Maintains tools and equipment in proper condition by cleaning, sharpening and oiling; keeps work area in a neat and orderly condition.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic I Qualifications for Appointment
- Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials and tools used in the repair of diesel and gasoline powered heavy equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions peculiar to the heavy equipment repair trade.
- Considerable knowledge of the design, operation and repair of heavy equipment.
- Skill in the use of mechanics tools, materials and testing equipment.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical defects, and determine parts and adjustments necessary for proper operation.
Education Requirements: Graduation from high school, supplemented with one years’ vocational/specialized training in diesel and gasoline heavy equipment repair.
Experience Requirements: Three years’ experience in diesel and gasoline heavy equipment repair.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
License, Certificate or Credential: Must possess and maintain a valid Class R Colorado driver’s license, and have a satisfactory driving record of no more than six points within the last three years. Possession of ASE certificate T1 or T2, preferred.
Other Requirements: Must occasionally work in moderately unpleasant conditions, and be exposed to major injury.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic II Qualifications for Appointment
- Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials and tools used in the repair of diesel and gasoline powered heavy equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions peculiar to the heavy equipment repair trade.
- Thorough knowledge of the design, operation and repair of heavy equipment.
- Skill in the use of mechanics tools, materials and testing equipment.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical defects and determine parts and adjustments necessary for proper operation.
- Ability to inspect work completed by Heavy Equipment Mechanics I and lower classifications, and to recommend changes.
- Ability to interpret and apply service manual instructions.
Education Requirements: Graduation from high school, supplemented with two years’ vocational/specialized training in diesel and gasoline heavy equipment repair, and satisfactory completion of at least two classes in mobile hydraulics.
Experience Requirements: Five years’ experience in diesel and gasoline heavy equipment repair.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
License, Certificate or Credential: Must possess and maintain a valid Class R Colorado driver’s license, and have a satisfactory driving record of no more than six points within the last three years. Possession of ASE certificate T1 or T2, preferred.

Denver Water temporary employees do not receive Denver Water benefits. All employment offers are contingent on the successful completion of a post-offer physical, which includes drug and alcohol testing. A strength test may also be given. A background check will be conducted to verify information submitted on application.
